Lolegaon is, a small Lepcha village and one of least exploited hill top at the Kalimpong hills is a wonderfully offbeat tourist destination. With a population of around 5000, Lolegaon is situated in an extreme end of a Himalayan Ridge.If you are looking for a break from the hustles and bustles of regular city life and feel the peace of mother nature, Lolegaon definitely is one of the best bet. The place is nestled atop of a flat hill with the feel of typical forestry with again the best possible natural wilderness.
Locally known as Kaffer or the “Village of Joy”, Lolegaon is a small Lepcha village. In a clear day, all major peaks of the mighty Kanchenjunga, Mt. Pandim and other exquisite peaks as well as the plains of Relli Valley can be witnessed with wonderness from Jhandidara – a hill top at Lolegaon. Even if you are lucky enough, Mt. Everest can also give you a glimpse of itself with the rising Sun praising its rays on it.
Lolegaon is a wildlife lover’s paradise too. The age-old forest of towering pine, cypress and oaks with their mossy trunk is an ideal place for watching endangered Himalayan species like black bear and mountain goats, numerous colourful birds and butterflies and rare orchids. The heritage forest is a mere 10 minutes walk from the bus stand and you can see the wonderfull wooden hanging foot bridge over the canopy of the huge trees, also known as “Canopy Walk”. Getting from one tree to another without touching the ground in the Canopy Wal is definitely a memory to cherish for years.
The Charkole Lolegaon which is about 15 kms uphill is also a must see during this tour. Situated amidst the deep, moist woods of Cypress, Oak, Rhododendrons and towering Pine trees, Charkhol Lolegaon, still at its virgin status, is full of the cheerful chirpings of numerous lesser seen birds.
Innumerable species of butterflies, a wide variety of flowers and orchids spread all over the place with variety of colours is a added bonus.
